The Finster Log

A New Year, A New Look

Posted on: 01/01/07, 16:01:40
Despite my claim that I run some pretty good web sites, for a living, I haven't given this one a new design since I started it, back in September of 2002. Some web master I am, right? My excuse is that I'm a content person. No, I'm not in a state of peaceful happiness — I focus on the information on a web site. How a site looks doesn't matter if there's nothing good to read. And I am a lazy slug, after all. But I finally decided to make a change, so here we are.

As a reader, you will notice a couple of things: the presentation now has what's known as a "fixed-width" format, so if your web browser window is really big the text columns don't grow wider to fill it, since that can make the page hard to read. The font size is also a little bigger, since some of us (um, that would be me) apparently need to get reading glasses soon.

The other big change is that I've opened up comments. I've gotten enough private messages over the past few months (thanks!) that it seemed like a nice idea to open The Finster Log up to my readers. You are still welcome to write me private notes (on the "Contact" link), but now you can also leave comments for everyone to read, and, you know, comment on.

The illustration in the top left corner will probably change, I'm just not sure how yet. I know, I know, if you're going to use an illustration it should be a good one, and you shouldn't put a rough draft up on your web site. But I've been fussing over it for too long. And besides, you just can't go wrong with Tumbly Finsters.

I'll probably tweak a few other things, but I'm pretty sure that the new site is functioning properly now. Let me know if you notice something weird, though, would you?

Here's hoping you and the ones you love get lots of tasty seeds in 2007.

The font is a little --- um, spindly, I guess could describe it --- for my eyes, even with the bifocals.

I love the illustration, though!

Thumbs (wings?) up for the new look and the comments function! Tumbly Finsters yay, and happy new year!

Oooooh! My first comments of the New Year! This is so exciting! I'm glad the Tumbly Finsters are popular.

Nance: could "spindly" suggest the letters are bigger but the font is rendered using thinner lines? I'll gin up a comparison for you....
01/02/07, 12:00:19
Yes, the thinner lines thing is the primary issue. Also, there are just some idiosyncracies in the font that others might not have issues with, but that stop my eye from scanning quickly. For example, look at our friend Mister Lowercase e

I'll repeat him: e

Something about that large upper loop to lower swoop ratio makes my eye stop.

I think you should order some tumbly finster stamps from the Post Office. If they do it with photos, they should do it with tumbly finsters, don't you think?

Don't worry about whining -- readability, usability, and functionality are all important to me, the CONtent Queen. The thing is, it's a bit of a puzzle. I don't see a large upper loop to lower swoop ratio on the "e," personally. But we could be seeing different things. Let's try to sort out exactly what you're seeing, first.

One generally designates the font for displaying a web page with a list of options. This way, if a user doesn't have a specific font installed on their computer, the web browser will try the next on the list.

The first font I have listed for the new web site design is Trebuchet, a font created for Microsoft to be used on web pages. It's included with several Microsoft products, so you probably have it installed on your computer.

The second font on my list is Verdana, which was the first on the list I used for the old version of the web site. It was also created for Microsoft, is used on lots of web sites, and is probably installed on your computer.

Take a look at images of the fonts on Wikipedia:
Trebuchet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Verdana: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Or, try creating a document in Word to see if you have either font installed, and see if the text looks the same as it does in the web browser. If you don't have either font, the web browser will default to another sans-serif font -- probably the first in your alphabetical list of fonts?

P.S. Who needs Tumbly Finster stamps when you have them tattooed on your wrist? http://thefinsters.com/pics...

Yeay. A new look! With Comments! Can I use more exclamation points? (oops!). Heady dialog about fonts aside, I already forget what it used to look like.
01/02/07, 21:46:28
Verrrrry interesting. It's the Trebuchet at 11.5 size that's doing it. My monitor must not be able to handle it. At 12, 10, or 8, the distortions don't appear; at 11.5 there's odd compressions and stetchy bits in the letters.

In any case, I'm getting more used to it. It's only bothering me now when it's in a large block of text.

Sorry for the font chat, Jen; we'll get back to our regularly scheduled birdie stuff ASAP!

I still think you need some tumbly finster stamps so those of us who remain tatoo deprived can enjoy... ah, well. It is to dream!

Groovy zeb photos today at efinch.

Jen! There didn't used to be Tumbly Finsters! The navigation column used to be on the right! There was no blue! There were no offending letters e! But, you know, apart from that there isn't too much that looks different. Words and photos have always been the focus.

Nance, where exactly are you seeing Trebuchet at 11.5?

And yeah, Roy Beckham at EFinch.com has some lovely photographs. If you haven't seen his "Mouth Markings of Estrildid Finches" yet, you Must! Go! Look! Now!

Aiieee! finch products! Lonchura finches! Zebra finches! SILVERBILLS! Why weren't these around when I *had* finches???
01/04/07, 08:08:40
You know what they say about finches...you can never have just 15....
01/04/07, 19:52:59
Pamela, when I copied segments from the comment section and pasted it into MS Word, Word ID'd the size as 11.5. I just tried with the main body of your blog entry, and it's got the same ID.

Yes, the mouth markings are great! And they've got finch calendars, too!
01/05/07, 10:07:25
Nance, first let me say that forcing Trebuchet into a half size DOES make those e's look funny. Next, let me say that the reason you are seeing the font in a half size is not caused by any code related to the new site design. As far as I can tell, it has something to do with the specific combination of operating system, web browser, etc. that's installed on your PC.

(Deletes rant about stupid Microsoft defaulting to badly-rendered half sizes of its OWN fonts for its basic applications....)

I suggest you download the "ClearType Tuner" from Microsoft's PowerToys collection:
http://www.microsoft.com/wi...
You can download it from the column on the right side of that page. (In fact, even if you aren't seeing funny e's, I've heard very good things about this utility. Go try it out.)

Of course, if you don't have Windows XP installed, it's a little more complicated. A Google search suggests there are PowerToys for older versions of the OS, but it isn't clear what they are....
01/16/07, 14:38:33
Oh, yay! Muchly better! Of course, it is all the fault of the nefarious Microlords...

Thanks, O Queen of Finsterdom!
