Buckwheat Is Tasty

Posted on: 12/31/07, 16:32:04
Back when Harley was climbing down to the counter to eat the Finsters' snacks (um, yeah, more on that later), I started adding more of the bigger grains to their mix. Turns out, the little guys like the big grains. In fact, Oolong just loves them. She loves the new food so much, I was even able to open the bottom door of the Finsterium, crouch less than two feet away, and take pictures while she was busy snacking!
Oolong loves her tasty seeds
Oolong loves her grains, buckwheat in particular, and is the first to hop down to the floor for both breakfast and lunch. Although she doesn't actually sing a Hunka Hunka Burning Love song to the tasty seeds, she chirps and cheeps while she's eating. It's very fun! Tasty Seed Love is a wonderful thing!

You can click here to pop up a really big photograph of Oolong eating tasty seeds and just covered with seed squeezins — but actually, I wouldn't recommend it. No, really, I'm serious. Don't click. Because while Oolong is sweet and squeaky, she's also very naked, and something of a horror to look at close up. Her head is almost entirely devoid of feathers, so you can see her ear, and the bone structure of her skull, and the pink under her skin where (presumably) the blood vessels show through, and I didn't bother to fix the red eye in this one, because....well. I dunno, the red sorta fits the whole scary theme going on in the photo. It's what, 10 times bigger than life? So really, don't look.

But if you do, you might notice a hint of abnormal tissue growth on her beak. Yeah, I'm afraid Oolong might be getting Old and Fat — a trend I've seen in Society finches. As they get older, they seem to eat more, sleep more, start pooping odd poops (chalky is the usual symptom), and show signs of problems with beak tissue. Liver problems is the general prognosis, which seems to be an issue for many older finches, at least in Finster Land. I guess I'll get some milk thistle to put in their water, and give Oolong all the buckwheat she wants.
