immersion blender!
The Cuisinart CSB-77 Smart Stick Hand Blender with Whisk and Chopper Attachments is pretty handy for blending up small amounts of vegetables for Harley and other birds to ignore when it's time for dinner. The immersion blender works pretty well for soups, too.

Go. To. Bed.

Last night at bedtime, Harley really didn't want to go to bed. Sure, some nights he'll want five more minutes of scritches and Loves. But usually we keep him up a little later than he'd like, so he's pretty good about going to bed. Not last night. No matter what we did, or who brought him to his cage, or how many times we tried, he did NOT want to go to bed.

We're sure it's because he got so spooked by the earthquake the night/morning before.
Harley, an African Grey parrot
No bed for him, he just wanted to be with us — well, Bruce, mostly. On the one hand, it was such a sweet experience, knowing he felt safer with us than alone. On the other hand, it was getting really late.

Finally, we turned the lights out, Bruce gave him scritches until he was pretty much asleep, and gently deposited him on his perch, still mostly asleep. He stayed there all night. Lucky for us, there were no more earthquakes.

We'll see how it goes tonight.

my grey, pippin, can be quite insistent about his bedtime. he usually goes to bed around 10 pm. sometimes before then, he'll start saying "birdie go bed." i'll tell him "don't go to bed yet - stay up with me a little bit longer." five or ten minutes later, it's "birdie go bed!" again. he'll repeat this until i finally put him to bed. his sense of time amazes me. on weekday mornings, he's right in the middle of my husband and i getting ready for work, "helping." my husband leaves a little before i do - as soon as hubby's ready to go, pippin says, "birdie go!" that means - it's time to put me in my cage, turn on PBS kids and give me a big sprig of millet. then he tells me "go on!"

Go ON! Pippin sounds great!

Harley also tells us when it's time for bed. He uses this really low, almost mechanical voice and asks "you ready for bed?"

These birds need their beauty sleep, you know!
