Bath Time #2

Posted on: 11/25/08, 17:44:54
Harley was in the mood for a bath today, so he set about taking one in his water dish.

I've described these water-dish-baths before. The thing to remember is that the dish is TOO SMALL for a proper bath. Here he is, spreading his wings anyway:

These photos are a few months old, but give a pretty good idea of all the water that gets splashed around. If I'm home, and not watching, he'll splatter water everywhere until the dish is about half empty. Then he'll climb to his cholla perch and use his latest go-to phrase: "you ready?" Usually, this means he either wants to go somewhere, or he's ready for snacks. In this case, it means he's ready for me to fill up his water dish, so he can take more bath.

We did that about four times today. He's such a clean, handsome bird!

Does he get himself wet? One of my caiques has the irritating habit of emptying his water bowl while taking a bath yet somehow remaining, mysteriously, dry. I still have not figured this out. (The other caique drenches himself).

My timneh has never bathed in her water dish, instead preferring to be sprayed. I think it might be a bit of laziness on her part :)

Harley never looks like he's getting wet. He'll have drops of water on his feathers, but the feathers never seem to get damp. Something about the color? Peanut rarely got very wet either, but when he did, you could really tell. Here's a picture:

Harley also never seems to preen much after a "bath," unlike Peanut and the Finsters. They always preen and ruffle their feathers after a bath.

What an adorable picture of Peanut! I just love wet birds!
