The New Finster

Posted on: 08/19/09, 20:47:11
In the "Can't Let Bruce Go Anywhere By Himself" category, Harley got a pet fish today. So far, his name is Finster, although Harley may decide to change that.
Harley and his pet fish
He (she?) is a Betta fish, or Siamese fighting fish. So far, Harley seems to like the tiny tank more than the fish, but that could change, too.

So far, the best part is the refreshing beverage.

Don't worry, the Fish Finster won't live on Harley's bar!

I love Betas! Yours is very beautiful, and it is a male. You rarely ever see the females in most petstores, as they are smaller, without any huge fins, and are of a much duller (or as I say, under-appreciated) coloring. I got my females at a specialty store.

I also might be a bit careful about letting Harley drink the water, if you can keep him away!

I love Harley's expression in the first pic. He's really watching the fish carefully!

Harley still likes to watch his fish, although sometimes Fish Finster's movements startles him. He seems surprisingly active for a Betta!

Here's a question for People Who Know Fish: the little tank came with some Betta Plus Bowl Conditioner; you're supposed to add half a cap of the stuff when you change out the water. Is this necessary, or can I just let tap water sit out overnight like I did when I was a kid? (Not that I had Bettas, but I did have fish, and some of them lived for a really long time. And I'm not making that up!)

You don't need it. What he does need, however (unfortunately?) is a bigger space and an aerator. I'd get a PH test kit as well to make sure your water has the proper balance :) The Bettas will last you a couple of years, goldfish have a very long lifespan. Good luck! :)

Aged water was what I used, too, but if I forgot to put some out and let it sit for 24 hours before using, then I'd use the conditioner.

Oh yes, and you might want to put some kind of cover over that tank. ;)

Bettas are known to leap out of water and dry up on the floor! Not a very pleasant sight. :X
